The House Entrance
Whenever you arrive at a household gathering, it’s probably a dialog begins with a bygone story about meals. Somebody says, “Keep in mind when…” after which we get instructed as soon as once more how Previous Uncle So-and-So (names have been modified to guard the responsible) spilled the gravy everywhere in the flooring at one in every of our conventional day-after-Thanksgiving breakfasts.
How did it occur? Properly, my fantastic mother-in-law, Patty Holt Standridge, who is named Aunt Patty on the Holt household get-togethers, makes the perfect sausage gravy on the planet. As a particular annual deal with on the day after Thanksgiving, Aunt Patty makes an enormous batch of sausage gravy, and Aunt Phyllis, her sister, makes her delicious biscuits. At one Thanksgiving, Moma Holt, the matriarch of the entire 80-plus bunch, mentioned, “Get your meals prepared, the gravy’s nearly accomplished.” So, as we have been organising the ham, turkey, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, biscuits, breakfast casseroles, espresso, jams, jellies, and fruit, we heard an enormous crash and regarded as much as see the makeshift table- holding the massive bowl of gravy- toppling to the ground. You might have heard a pin drop as all 80 pairs of eyes grew to become glued to the sight of Aunt Patty’s scrumptious gravy slowly spreading everywhere in the flooring amongst the rubble of the damaged bowls and damaged platters stuffed with meat and eggs. Taking inventory of the state of affairs, Moma Holt hollered with anguish, “It’s ruined! It’s ruined! The entire meal is ruined!” Proper on her heels, Cousin Cory yelled out what we have been all pondering: “Oh No! Not the gravy!” Y’all, it was a giant ol’ mess. Gravy, eggs, meat, and many grease was everywhere in the flooring. So, Aunt Patty, cousin Karen, and I labored because the clean-up crew whereas Aunt Phyllis and the opposite sisters went again to the kitchen to cook dinner up some extra breakfast. However, we have been out of sausage. There could be none of Aunt Patty’s sausage gravy that 12 months. We needed to make do with what was left after all of the meat, eggs, and gravy have been cleaned up and thrown out. We have been devastated, to say the least.
We Alabamians have been taught from a younger age to be type and to sympathize with of us who discover themselves in a nasty state of affairs. By no means make an individual really feel unhealthy if a nasty factor occurs to them. So, after the preliminary shock had worn off, we had an uproar of dialog amongst ourselves to search out out what occurred to our gravy and who was the perpetrator all whereas making an attempt to not make him really feel unhealthy. We realized that somebody had leaned on the desk sending Aunt Patty’s scrumptious home made gravy crashing to the ground. We commiserated with him about his accident and checked on his aches and scratches from the autumn, grateful that the new gravy didn’t land on him. And, we have been nonetheless good to him, you understand… To today, if he isn’t within the room, and typically simply because he’s within the room, somebody will all the time say, “Keep in mind when Previous Uncle So-and-So spilled the gravy?” And, simply so you understand, we maintain a cautious watch on him once we are having gravy- simply saying.
